Most motorists will pass them without a second thought, but traffic islands play an important part in reducing vehicle speeds in areas renowned for traffic problems. Consequentially, they can also help reduce accident rates and the chances of having to seek road traffic accident (RTA) compensation.
Traffic islands are raised strips used to narrow roads or enforce a particular road positioning around blind corners or dangerous junctions. Not only do they encourage drivers to slow their speed, they also prevent motorists from overtaking in dangerous areas.
However traffic islands can often prove contentious with motorists and local residents when they are put in the place of other traffic calming schemes such as speed cameras. In May 2010, new traffic islands and bollards were introduced into a residential area in Stapleton, Bristol. Rather than being welcomed by locals, residents declared the new measures dangerous and unnecessary.
Just two days after the traffic island and bollards were put in place, a taxi crashed straight into them and hit the wall of a 300-year-old listed home. Although the driver was uninjured, the fascia and gate post surrounding the house were badly damaged.
Conversely, in 2008, the widow of a cyclist hit by a vehicle on the A28 campaigned for a traffic island to be installed on the road where he died to help reduce traffic speeds. The cyclist, who was a champion road racer, was hit by a council van and died at the scene from serious head injuries.
A traffic island was suggested to be installed at the spot where the accident happened to slow down vehicles and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
Although controversial, traffic calming measures such as traffic islands, can be highly effective at reducing RTA rates.
