One of the sites at which a car accident may occur is a roundabout. Despite being a familiar fixture in UK driving, they are notably rarer in North America, where the cross-road junction with lights remains more common.
Although the continuous flow of traffic on a roundabout may suggest that such a junction may carry a greater risk of being involved in a car crash, it has been argued that the roundabout is, in fact, a safer option. A study undertaken by the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that roundabouts had 40 percent fewer road traffic accidents overall, and a massive 80 percent reduction in the number of collisions that caused personal injury to car occupants.
This was shown to be related to the reduction in the number of collision points that the circulatory system involved; whereas a crossroads makes it possible for collisions to occur in 32 places, the fact that the cars on a roundabout travel in the same direction reduces that number to 8.
This does, however, rely on drivers using the road doing so in a safe and sensible manner. In situations where an otherwise-safe junction becomes the site of a road traffic accident through the bad driving of one person, anyone who suffers personal injury as a result may find they are eligible to make a compensation claim as a result of that bad driving.
The two main sites of accident from bad driving, as opposed to mechanical failure, are at the points of entry and exit. Cars that fail to slow or stop as necessary at the entrance point of a roundabout, or enter the flow of traffic without enough room to do so, may well cause an accident; those that attempt to leave a roundabout from the wrong lane, or attempt to stay on the junction when their lane is filtering them off, may also be the cause of a car crash.
