Younger drivers, speeding and road traffic accident compensation

Younger drivers, particularly men between the ages of 16 and 22, are the group of drivers who are most likely to engage in risk-taking behaviour. As a result, they are involved in a higher proportion of serious car crashes than any other motoring demographic and, as a consequence, young men are the defendants in a disproportionate number of road traffic accident compensation cases.

For many decades now, politicians, police, policymakers and road safety groups have sought to answer the question of how younger men can be dissuaded from risky and reckless driving. And, although it is clear that there have been falls in overall accident statistics, including car accidents involving younger, male drivers, it is also true that younger men continue to be involved in a disproportionately high number of incidents involving death or serious personal injury.

A police spokesperson comments, "We are always keen to identify vulnerable groups and work with them."

Perhaps one of the major reasons for the overrepresentation of younger drivers is their propensity for speeding.

On the issue of speeding the statistics are clear: two-thirds of all fatal or injurious crashes happen on roads with a speed limit of 30mph or less – what this means is that crashes happen not so much as a result of speed but of inappropriate speed. In short, speed limits exist for a reason, reasons that risk-taking younger drivers may fail to comprehend.

Indeed, when incidents occur as a result of inappropriate speed, the consequences can be traumatic for injured parties and, as a result, road traffic accident compensation may be payable.
