Road accident compensation and the fatal four list

However much it might sound like it, the Fatal Four is not some kind of enemy of Marvel Comics' superhero team the Fantastic Four. In fact, the Fatal Four is the list of the four main causes of and serious car crashes – the kind which result in fatalities, catastrophic injuries and significant payouts of road accident compensation.

But what are these four main causes?

Drink driving
It's a long time since drink driving was anything close to socially acceptable. It is now accepted fact that drink driving impairs the senses, reduces response time and causes drivers to engage in risky and reckless driving behaviour.

Not only do drink drivers risk their own lives, they also risk those of passengers and other road users.

No wearing a seatbelt
It is a well-known fact that not wearing a seatbelt can endanger your own life – however, it is a lesser-known fact that not wearing a seatbelt can endanger the safety of other vehicle occupants, as well as, potentially, other road users.

Although there is some evidence that in certain collisions wearing a seatbelt can increase the risk of whiplash injury, it is also true that in the same kinds of collisions it may also be preventing a serious head injury.

A spokesperson from Leicestershire Police comments, "It could save your life. Also if passengers in a vehicle aren't wearing a seatbelt, particularly if they're sat in the back, not only are they putting themselves at risk but also the people in the front."

Speeding
It's simple: the higher the speed, the greater the stopping distance and the greater the force of collision. Inappropriate speed takes lives, causes personal injuries and is a huge cause of claims for road accident compensation.

Driving while using a mobile phone
Some studies show that driving while using a mobile phone can be just as dangerous as drink driving. Not only is it an offence, guilty parties can also be considered liable in any consequent car crash injury claim.
