Road accident compensation and surveying driver attitude

If there is ever to be any significant and sustained reduction in the UK's road accident compensation bill, it will necessitate a major shift in driver attitude, according to the nation's leading road safety experts.

No win, no fee lawyers are well aware of the way driver error causes crashes ‐ after all it is the very existence of an at-fault party which makes it possible for an injured person to claim compensation – so it is no surprise that the legal profession is also keen to address driver attitude as a key part of an advanced road safety strategy.

"All too often we receive road accident compensation claims for injuries suffered as a result of dangerous, reckless or distracted driving," says a spokesperson from YouClaim.

He adds, "Surveys consistently show us that the vast majority of drivers believe themselves to be considerably above average in ability, so perhaps the chief cause of many of these accidents can be understood in terms of complacency."

A 2011 survey by road safety charity Brake, in conjunction with insurer Direct Line, confirms this view. It found that 98% of drivers believe themselves to be safer than average.

This level of self-confidence is surprising when it is considered that 35% believe there to be more unsafe drivers on the roads than those which can be considered safe.

A spokesperson with Direct Line commented, "In previous research, we have discovered that large numbers of drivers admit to speeding, drink driving and driving whilst tired, demonstrating that many drivers either don't see these as important, or need to seriously re-examine their attitude to safe driving."
