There would be a reduction in car crash deaths and injuries if the UK brought in a 20 mph speed limit for some roads, according to a study published in the British Medical Journey in 2009.
Researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine examined more than 20 years worth of of geographically-coded car accident data, from 1986 to 2006.
Significantly, they concluded that 20mph speed limits in some areas could result in 41.9% fewer road accident injuries, even when accounting for a general downward trend in the casualty rate.
The argument for a 20 mph speed limit in some areas becomes even more compelling when it is considered that those who would benefit most would be children.
The study's lead author says that the research is "the most detailed evidence to date of the effect of 20 mph zones on road casualties and collisions in major metropolitan areas. Twenty mph zones appear to reduce casualty numbers, especially serious injury and death, and suggest that the benefits are greatest among younger children.
"In the context of the wider evidence about the health burdens associated with road injuries, this evidence supports introducing 20 mph zones in major British cities and also in similar metropolitan areas elsewhere. Indeed, even within London, there is a case for extending the currently limited provision of such zones to other roads with high numbers of casualties."
A spokesperson from no win, no fee specialist YouClaim comments, "One problem with this approach is that it would need to gain the support of the voting, motoring public.
"Yet even then, it would still rely on drivers abiding by the law and driving responsibly. And, just as now, reckless drivers who cause accidents would still be held liable for compensation claims."
