As quad bikes grow more popular in the UK, they are appearing more regularly in car accident compensation claims. This is despite the fact that most models are not equipped to be ridden legally on the roads.
The four-wheeled sports 'bikes' are designed to be ridden off-road; even here, they can be unpredictable in their handling and prone to overturning, particularly when a rider is carrying a passenger. This is only worsened on surfaces that the vehicle is not designed for.
The charity Brake, which campaigns to prevent road traffic accidents, claims that all quad bikes are unsuitable for road use, but some importers insist that they have some models that are road-legal.
However, manufacturers of quad bikes, such as Honda, are also quick to discourage the use of these vehicles, pointing out that:
A quad bike's tyres and suspension are set up for difficult surfaces, and seemingly low speeds are enough to heighten the chances of a car crash to undesirable levels;
A quad bike has no traffic-dodging ability - its width prevents it from filtering through spaces that a motorbike would fit through, and it cannot legally use motorbike parking spaces;
A road-legal quad bike has to pay the full road tax, and - in London - the full Congestion Charge, meaning that it has the same legal costs as an enclosed car.
The Department for Transport is similarly negative about the majority of quad bikes being used on public roads, noting that the construction of many models is not suitable for avoiding or surviving a car accident. However, it acknowledges that a quad bike that can be shown to meet the European Whole Vehicle Type Approval system may be considered road-legal providing it has a Certificate of Conformity issued by the manufacturer and is appropriately registered.
