Caravanning has long been a love of the British but to prevent against a caravan accident, certain guidelines should be adhered to ensure you are legal and roadworthy.
If you are planning to tow a caravan for the first time you will need to check whether you are fully licensed to do so. From 1997, category B vehicles, i.e most cars that you can drive with a standard driving licence, can tow a touring caravan weighing up to 750 kg with a combined weight of the car and caravan not exceeding 4.25 tonnes. If your caravan is heavier, you will have to take a further driving test to be legal.
Choosing a lighter caravan not only means that you will have more weight to play with, but it also makes towing safer and more stable. Caravanning clubs usually recommend that your caravan weighs no more than 85% of your vehicle's kerbside weight. However, you should never go over the caravan manufacturer's stipulated tow load regardless of the percentage weight ratio between your caravan and towing vehicle.
It is illegal to transport passengers in your caravan on any road in the UK and your touring caravan insurance will become invalid if you break this law. Pets on the other hand are allowed to be in the caravan when in transit but it is not a recommended practice.
As well as sticking to the maximum weight limits, the distribution of the weight is another important factor to ensure the stability of your caravan and prevent a caravan accident.
The heaviest items should be low down and close to the axels with only the lighter items stored in higher areas. The nose weight of the caravan should only carry 4% or around 25kg of the overall weight to ensure even towing and to lessen the strain on the towbar which connects the car to the caravan.
If the caravan is not evenly distributed, towing will become much harder and the caravan will be less stable making you more vulnerable to accidents.
If you have been in a caravan accident that was not your fault, you could be eligible to make a caravan accident claim.
