Keep pets safe when transporting them in a car

Whether taking a dog for a walk in open country, or a cat to the vets, pet owners often find they need to transport a pet in their vehicle at one point or another. However, animals can be distracting passengers, so it is very important that motorists ensure pets are securely restrained in their cars.

Carrying a dog as a passenger

Many dog owners choose to drive to different locations to provide longer and more scenic walks for their pets and where they can let them off the lead. If allowed to have free range of the car, however, dogs can behave incredibly dangerously, sometimes obstructing the motorist's ability to drive safely.

The boot of a hatchback is usually the safest place in a car for a dog, as drivers can attach them to a harness to stop them from moving around and install a dog guard to prevent them from entering the main part of the car.

In smaller cars and saloons, the boot will be unsuitable to accommodate a pet, in which case dogs can be restrained within the main cabin of the car using a specially designed seatbelt which connects a harness to a standard car seatbelt.

Putting other pets in the car

Dogs aren't the only pets which need to be transported in cars, and pet owners may occasionally need to put a cat, a hamster or even a hedgehog in their car to move them to another location. Such animals should be placed in a pet carrier, which should then be positioned securely in the vehicle so that it is not likely to fall and injure the animal.

If drivers do not ensure that pets are safely secured in their cars, the animals can unexpectedly become aggressive or jump onto the driver's lap which could consequently cause them to lose control of the vehicle.
