Lorry accident claim and the dangers of the loading bay

For warehouse staff vehicle creep is a big concern when loading or unloading a lorry as it can be one of the biggest causes of lorry accident claims.

Vehicle creep can either be caused by an unstable lorry which moves while being loaded or unloaded, or it can be caused by a driver moving off before workers have finished with the delivery.

Not only can this put loading staff at high risk of crush injuries from coming into contact with the moving vehicle, it can also leave workers vulnerable to personal injury from falling boxes from the delivery. This can lead to devastating injuries which can leave workers unable to work, drive or deal with everyday tasks.

To prevent against vehicle creep, there are a variety of safety measures available which can be put in place. Wheel chocks are the main form of prevention of vehicle movement and can come in either moulded rubber or cast aluminium. Either variety works by holding the tyres in place while the lorry is loading and then depending on the system, can either be physically removed, or can be linked up to a traffic light system which will release the vehicle when the loading has been finished.

Another safety device that can prevent against unintentional pull-aways is via a trailer safety lock. This is fitted to a parked trailer once the air hose has been disconnected, preventing the driver connecting the trailer and driving away.

A spokesperson from Thorworld, a manufacturer of loading safety equipment said, "Of course, none of these products on their own can fully account for the possibility of human error, so good visual and audible communication systems such as internal/external traffic lights can also be vital in letting drivers know when it is safe to back up to a loading dock and, perhaps more importantly, when it is safe to drive away whilst at the same time informing warehouse personnel of the situation."

Employers are responsible for ensuring that their employees are not put in any undue danger while at work. Without stringent safety procedures put in place, lorry accidents involving loading bays can be a real hazard.

If you have been injured in a lorry accident, you may be eligible to make a compensation claim for any personal injuries that you may have suffered.
