Severe brain injury accident survivors have compensation other than money

For someone who has suffered from a brain injury accident, and their loved ones, the question of monetary compensation for the harm inflicted is often secondary to the fact of survival and making the best of the remainder of their life.

Modern treatments and rehabilitation available through medical services in developed cultures mean that far more people live after a traumatic head injury, such as that caused in a road traffic accident, than would have been the case at the end of the last century.

Although continuing disabilities may mean a change in lifestyle for a victim and, depending on the injury it can be years before some semblance of normal lifestyle returns, it seems that some severely-injured people appreciate their lives more than those with lesser injuries.

In a study published in April 2010, UK university researchers working with the charity Headway were surprised to find that people most adversely affected by an accident were better satisfied than the other group interviewed.

The length of time a victim had been in a coma appeared to make the difference between how the 630 people expressed their outlook on their situations. Those who had been unconscious for 15 days or more were compared with others whose state of coma had been much shorter.

They were asked how various institutions had helped them and the state of their relationships since suffering their brain injury. On average, the respondents expressed considerable life satisfaction, taking their circumstances into consideration.

The researchers concluded that sustaining a head injury did not always lead to a deterioration in the quality of a person's life and that the most negative impacts can be reduced by support from others around them, practical help from charitable and health organisations and by strengthening of personal identity.

By developing a group membership identity, as a survivor, someone who has suffered a brain injury through causes such as vehicle accidents, falls, sport accidents or medical reasons, can become personally stronger.

Taking action to claim compensation from a person or organisation responsible for causing a brain injury could help a victim come to terms with the circumstances of their changed life and a monetary sum could help to provide equipment and services, such as special wheelchairs or adapted vehicles, to enable them to become more socially active.
