Romantic rows and car crashes

Sometimes a car crash can be caused by very domestic factors. The good news is that "romantic road rage", where a driver has got behind the wheel in an agitated state following an argument with a partner, is avoidable; the bad news is that it is very common, as 30% of couples admit to driving when a domestic rift has made them unfit to do so.

In 2010, car insurance company More Than looked into the issue of romantic road rage and found that 8% of people have admitted to suffering a car crash following an argument with a spouse or partner.

Although the survey did not detail the proportion these road accidents had as their direct cause the distracted or erratic driving of an irate partner, it did reveal that 36% confessed to inattentive driving following a row. Furthermore, 19% owned up to driving erratically following an argument.

"With so many accidents having occurred as a result of romantic road rage, it's vital that drivers understand how getting behind the wheel in an overly emotional state could be the cause of a serious, or even fatal, accident," said a More Than spokesperson.
While a spokesperson from no win, no fee firm YouClaim advised drivers that "although it is understandable that couples will seek to put distance between each other following a row, to do so risks a car accident, personal injury and, potentially liability for a compensation claim."

He added, "It is a much better course of action to go for a cup of tea and sit down and gather your composure before getting behind the wheel."

These views have the support of psychologists. One psychologist explains, "Being upset, angry or frustrated with a partner or lover is a sure-fire way to distract from safe and responsible driving."

"With personal issues racing through their mind, drivers are at risk of subconsciously releasing tension by driving fast, or on the other hand being distracted by their heartache.

"The acute emotional turmoil that a blazing row causes can lead a driver to speed, behave aggressively toward other drivers, drive too close to other vehicles and take unnecessary risks such as overtaking when it's dangerous."
