In assessing the risk of a forklift truck accident occurring, it can be easy to overlook the danger of such an incident taking place on the public road. However, this can be a major mistake, as, due to their weight and limited handling ability, road accidents involving forklift trucks can have very serious consequences.
Indeed, the danger of this type of incident is just one of the reasons why forklift trucks must be registered, taxed and insured, even for the shortest of journeys, such as those between working sites.
Indeed, these rules apply to any setting where the public might have access, including car parks, forecourts and rubbish dumps.
Furthermore, there are also requirements that operators hold a relevant licence for operating the vehicle. It is also necessary to remember that any penalty points or bans on their personal car licences will carry over to the forklift, if it is driven on the road, meaning banned drivers cannot operate forklifts in public spaces
David Ellison from the Forklift Truck Association explains other aspects of using forklifts on public roads which are designed to help reduce the risk of a forklift truck accident.
"If the truck will travel more than 1,000 yards, it will also need to comply with the Construction and Use Regulations or have Type Approval," he says.
But he warns that understanding all the vagaries of the regulations takes time and attention, "These rules can be tricky to understand - our members' technical bulletin summarising the key points is 14 pages long."
He adds, "Mature operators with good road sense should be used. Other road users will not understand that fork lift trucks swing out as they turn and that operators have restricted visibility. "Flashing orange beacons can be a real bonus and having a colleague (banksman) help with manoeuvring can be useful at busy or difficult locations."
