Motorists who cause road accidents through reckless or careless driving are likely to be punished in a number or ways, from penalty points, fines and driving bans, to prison sentences and liability for personal injury compensation.
However, another way to punish drivers and provide safe-driving incentive to the driving public is to "name and shame" those drivers who commit offences and cause motorcycle accidents and car crashes.
The "name and shame" approach has been trialled in a number of countries, including the United States, China and Japan. It aims to provide both punishment for offending drivers and disincentive to those who are considering the path or carelessness or recklessness.
The name and shame approach was trialled in Nigeria in 2011, with the "roll call of shame" instituted to try and reduce the incidence of road accidents on the nation's roads.
"A roll of shame register has been instituted to accommodate high calibre personalities who are supposed to be role models but chose to commit road traffic infractions. I will therefore seize this opportunity to warn reckless drivers, including convoy drivers to drive with caution and have regard for other road users, as appropriate sanctions including arraignment at mobile courts will be ensured for culprits," commented the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).
Road traffic accident cases that get reported in the media, usually those involving high value catastrophic injury claims, frequently name those responsible for causing the incident and as such can, in a sense, be said to "name and shame".
