Car accident gangs are a real threat to the ordinary UK road user. They work by targeting innocent drivers, usually at junctions, roundabouts or slip-roads, then performing emergency stops in front of them.
Indeed, they are no small problem. In fact, it is thought that the activities of these "cash for crash" gangs add around 5% to the price of every motor insurance premium in the country.
The Insurance Fraud Bureau is the organisation charged with ensuring that these criminals are weeded out of the personal injury claim system.
Fortunately, in 2009 they reported that there had been an 11% reduction in the activity of these fraudsters. The majority of this reduction, achieved with the help of police, was attributable to IFB successes in former cash for crash hotspots such as Luton, Walsall, Harrow and Northwest London.
However, the scale and complexity of the task facing the IFB is illustrated by the rise in car accident fraudster activity in East London, Barking, Ilford, Halifax and Liverpool.
Richard Davies, IFB's deputy chairman, comments, "We targeted some of the biggest gangs first, but new ones are emerging all the time and we can only combat them with the help of police."
While a fraud specialist with Zurich Insurance explains how such claims can quickly become expensive. "As well as multiple passengers, all of whom claim injuries such as whiplash, claims can be inflated by high bills for courtesy cars and repairs. A seemingly minor bump can inflate into a £50,000 bill," he says.
Combating the gangs is undoubtedly important. Not only do they earn as much as £50,000 from each fraudulent claim, the proceeds often go towards funding further criminal activity, such as the drugs trade or human trafficking.
Worryingly, there is even evidence of some no win, no fee solicitors working in collaboration with the fraudsters. Allianz's fraud manager says that the IFB is tackling this by "increasingly targeting professionals, such as corrupt solicitors who work with staged accident gangs."
