Driving safely and staying aware on the road

Although the majority of road users try to drive as safely as they can, a great number of car accidents occur every year causing serious injuries, and in some cases, fatalities.

Some of these car accidents are caused due to unforeseeable circumstances, however, drivers can try their best to prevent a collision by staying aware and responsible when on the road.

The dangers of drink driving

Those choosing to drink alcohol will find that their reaction times are decreased and that they are more likely to behave recklessly, therefore it is incredibly dangerous for people under the influence of alcohol to attempt to drive.

If calculated by a breathalyzer test, the maximum amount of alcohol a driver is legally allowed to consume is 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breathe, however, this is difficult for a person to judge when they are drinking as alcohol can affect people in different ways depending on factors such as weight, height, age and even stress levels.

Therefore, it is widely recommended that drivers refrain from consuming alcohol at all if they know that they will be driving later on in the day. People can choose a designated driver for the evening who will not drink any alcohol, or arrange for alternative transport, such as a taxi.

Motorists who do choose to drive when they are over the legal limit of alcohol put their own lives, and the lives of any passengers and other road users, at risk. Drivers who are found to be over the drink drive limit face a driving ban, a fine, penalty points on their licence, and in some cases, even a prison sentence.

Other factors which can affect drivers

Although many motorists may consciously make an effort to never get behind the wheel when they have been drinking, there are other influences which can also affect a driver's safety on the road.

There are a number of different types of medication which have a side-effect of drowsiness. For example, a driver who has been suffering from hay fever may choose to take some anti-allergy tablets to relieve their symptoms, however, if they are not careful to choose a medication which does not cause drowsiness, they are likely to pose a danger on the road if they then drive.

To avoid being involved in a car accident, drivers should ensure that they are always alert when they take to the highway and always act responsibly.
