It is well known that teen-aged and younger drivers are involved in a disproportionately high number of car accidents. There are many reasons for this, ranging from younger drivers' inexperience, to their propensity for thrill-seeking and risk-taking.
Road safety experts have long tried to tackle these problems, through a combination of legislation and safety awareness campaigns.
Now manufacturers are getting in on the act too. Ford, as is so often the case, is leading the way. The US company has developed a technology called MyKey, which is designed to allow parents to limit car speed and stereo system volume, as well as to enable automatic seatbelt reminder notices.
MyKey works through an electronic chip that is inserted into the ignition. It enables an 80mph speed limit restriction, and a warning "chime" to be played at 45, 55 and 65 mph. With excessive speed a factor in many car accidents involving younger drivers, MyKey is already proving very popular with many parents.
The MyKey system also allows parents to restrict a vehicle's audio system to 44% of its maximum volume.
And, with some research indicating that new drivers are the group most likely to run out of petrol, MyKey's low-fuel warning, which sounds consistently between 75 miles to empty, is also likely to prove a hit.
A Ford spokesperson says that MyKey's anti-car crash technology, far from hindering younger drivers, is designed to help them, while also reassuring parents. "Teenage drivers don't really have a feel for how fast they're going and it's a nice way for them to learn what their speed is with just a bing from the dashboard," she commented.
