Are car accidents really that prolific?

Around 10 people are killed and even more receive serious personal injuries each day in the UK as a result of road accidents.

A total of 3,221 people were killed in road accidents in 2004, 671 of who were pedestrians, 585 were motorcyclists and 134 were cyclists. However, car accidents account for many of these deaths that occur on our roads.

271,017 people were harmed in road accidents in 2005, including 3,201 fatalities, a slight though statistically insignificant decrease in the figure from the previous year.

This is fairly prolific when compared to the fact that in the same year, just over 5,000 injuries resulted from train accidents, accidents through the movement of railway vehicles and accidents on railway premises. There is a 500,000/1 chance of being killed in a train accident and death by bus accident is even less likely at 13 million to one. It seems that travelling by public transport is far safer than jumping into the car.

An explanation for this could be our ever-growing reliance on our four-wheeled friends. Many households in the UK have at least two cars now and not only are there environmental concerns about CO2 emissions but there is also concern that the crowded roads are leading to an increase in car accidents.

There are of course many reasons why car accidents occur from speeding and drink-driving right through to using a mobile phone behind the wheel and the hazards presented by poor road conditions. The government has made attempts to curb dangerous driving by implementing new laws but the next few years will reveal whether car accident rates decrease as a result.
