Car crash technology
As road safety technology evolves so too does the possibility that we might one day view regular car crashes to be a tragic aspect of the past. This is not to say that car accidents will be wiped out all together, rather that their frequency and seriousness will be minimised to such an extent as to make them a statistical rarity.
There have recently been a number of promising technological innovations which point the way to the car crash prevention measures of the future.
One of these mooted technological innovations is the Sensory Detector. The sensory detector would work by determining just how close a car is to a vehicle in front and adjusting the speed of it to a level which would prevent the possibility of a road accident.
Other proposed technological innovations include the use of inbuilt alcohol detectors. These would work by disabling a vehicle's ignition if alcohol is detected on the driver's breath.
One even more sophisticated prototype is the drifting monitor. These would work by keeping track of how close a vehicle is travelling to road barriers and lane markers. Any transgression of the roads normal boundaries would result in the sounding of an alarm alerting the driver to the danger. All of these technological innovations have clear potential to reduce the toll wreaked by car crashes.
The most stunning showcase yet of these car crash prevention technologies came in November 2007 when California was host to a driverless car race for robotic vehicles. Eleven vehicles competed in the event, with, amazingly, six of them completing the 60 mile course, the winner doing so in under six hours.
Promisingly, the race showcased many seminal technologies which will one day of use to the regular road user. The course simulated a typical busy urban environment, complete with the kind of hazards motorists face every day on the UK's roads.
Perhaps the most impressive piece of technology on show belonged to the winning team. It is a sophisticated laser scanner the winning team have christened Lidar.
Team member Chris Urmson explains, "It has 64 individual lasers in it, and it spins about 10 times a second to generate about a million measurements of the world.
"That gives us a kind of point cloud which we can use to help understand where features are - cars, walls, the sidewalk and so on."
The future is now
It is important to remember that we are already reaping the benefits of road safety technology. Over the past 25 years, in many places, car crash fatalities have declined by as much as 50%
Even in countries like the US where there have been increases in the number of road deaths, based on the figures of number deaths per 100 miles driven, there has been a significant fall in rates of death and serious personal injury.
More traditional solutions
Even with all the scientific innovations being made, there is still a place for more traditional life-saving action. Here are just a few of the ideas that have been trialled successfully in various places across the world.
A ban on young drivers driving at night.
Mandatory advanced driver courses.
A "P plate" system for new drivers.
Blanket ban on any kind of drink-driving.
Restrictions on passengers for young drivers.
Chaperone or mentor system for new drivers.
Vehicle performance restricition.
