The news that a rear seat passenger who was left paralysed in a road accident has been awarded car crash compensation of £8.35m, despite the driver at fault being uninsured, shows several aspects of the UK system of victims receiving financial help after an accident.
The man, who is now 27 and lives in Pontefract, Yorkshire, suffered catastrophic spinal and brain injuries after the car, which was being driven by a work colleague, crashed into a deep ditch in Cambridgeshire in November 2005.
