Car crashes, mobile phones and texting

No one ever plans on having to make a car crash compensation claim, but some unfortunate road users are forced to if they are hit by someone using their mobile phone whilst driving.

According to the RAC, October 2010 saw 28% of drivers admitting to talking with their mobile on the road, and 31% admitting to writing text messages.

Not only do people behind the wheel risk being distracted by holding phone calls and writing text messages, they also risk being distracted by other people phoning or texting them.

The RAC found that in 2010 over half of all drivers questioned confessed that they would look at their phone to see who was calling them, and would also read a text which had been sent to them.

With all of these distractions, drivers are likely to take their eyes of the road at least once during their journey, and that one time could cause a road traffic accident.

Shockingly, 47% of people surveyed in 2010 believed that texting while driving was not a distraction. Statistics from the Department of Transport found otherwise, collecting data from 2009 which showed that 509 people had been injured in a mobile-phone-related car accident and 16% of those had experienced very severe injuries or had been killed.

Drivers may not think that they are taking their attention off the road enough to put their safety and the safety of others at risk, but at high speeds looking away from the road for even a second can have devastating and sometimes fatal results.

Distraction and stopping distances

Being distracted while driving is very dangerous. Depending on what speed the vehicle is travelling at the stopping distance will vary, but even at 20mph the driver could have a minor accident so at higher speeds the damage could be much worse.

Some news stories tell how, looking away from the road a few moments, the driver has not spotted stationary cars ahead, a red light, or a sharp turn in the road and has suffered a road traffic accident as a result, leading any other owners of vehicles involved to seek car crash compensation.

Drivers should be aware of weather conditions affecting stopping distances, the shape of the road, other road users and pedestrians, especially at night when vision is significantly reduced.

Being familiar with a road does not make it safe for the motorist to become less alert. Cars may be parked in unexpected places or severe weather might have brought down trees or flooded parts of the road ‐ it is vital to stay vigilant in all circumstances and on all roads.

Predicting unexpected hazards, when concentration is not fully on the highway ahead, is impossible.
