More young women and girls (aged 17 to 19) die in car accidents where they are passengers than in road safety incidents where they are drivers. Additionally, no win, no fee solicitors frequently represent car crash compensation cases involving young female claimants who have suffered personal injury in incidents where their boyfriends, or male admirers, have been behind the wheel.
"Showing off" is a significant factor in accidents of this nature. Younger drivers are twice as likely to die in a road traffic accident when they are carrying passengers of their own age and the likelihood of a crash is increased according to the number of passengers being carried; for example, two young passengers doubles the risk and four young passengers increases it fourfold.
It is clearly tragic: a young couple setting out together by car, possibly on a date, only to never return because of the reckless driving of the young man.
In response to this, the "For My Girlfriend" campaign was launched to try and raise awareness of the alarming number of road deaths that happen when young women passengers are being driven by their boyfriends.
FMG encourages young girls and women to speak up and warn their boyfriends about the dangers of drink-driving, drug-driving and speeding.
Each year, the campaign is relaunched on Valentine's Day and 2010 was no different. It featured the strap line "Don't hurt the one you love" and a video of a girl lying in a hospital bed, with her devastated boyfriend sitting in the room struggling with the dawning realisation that his driving has caused the accident. The film finished with the chilling caption: "More girls die as passengers than as drivers. Don't hurt the one you love and take care when you're out as a couple."
Typically, the FMG campaign also uses a "Valentine's card" as a way of delivering its message.
Over the years personal injury solicitors have played their part in raising awareness of the campaign, with many having experience of securing car crash compensation for young women claimants injured in accidents caused by their boyfriends.
