A flat tyre could lead to a car crash compensation claim

The Highway Code indicates that a driver should make weekly checks on their vehicle to keep it in good working order and safe to take on the roads. However, many people do not adhere to this advice and as a result might cause a car crash.

Maintaining car tyres is very important, as they largely support a vehicle's weight, and their state affects breaking distances and control the motorist has over the car through steering. The Highway Code says that drivers should be "checking the condition of the vehicle's tyres for damage, air pressure and tread" weekly.

Driving with tyre damage, low pressure or a flat, increases the risk of an accident.

Dangers of a flat tyre
If a driver has been checking their vehicle weekly, they will probably notice a flat tyre before getting behind the wheel, but sometimes a tyre goes flat on the road after being punctured by something the car has been driven over. Occasionally, the driver may hear a bang, or similar noise which should direct their attention to the fact that the tyre has suffered damage.

Some people do not know how to change a tyre, but even those who do are in danger of being hit by another vehicle if trying to change it on the side of a busy road or motorway. In these situations it is often best for the individual to call a repair company to come and change the tyre for them.

Driving with a flat tyre will reduce the control the motorist has over the vehicle, and this can be especially dangerous at high speeds. Not only this, but the wheel rim could also be damaged. Wheel rims are expensive to replace and if the car owner does not spot the damage, it may cause future flat tyres. The wheel rim supports the tyre's shape, and if it stops doing this the tyre may begin to vibrate, leading to it not keeping its pressure.

How to reduce the risk of a tyre-related car crash
The simplest way of avoiding a road traffic accident caused by a flat tyre, is to check the car over before getting behind the wheel. If the wheel receives a puncture during a journey, then the motorist should keep driving straight (if possible) until they have managed to slowly reduce the vehicle's speed, and then carefully steer to the side of the road if there is a safe place to stop.

While slowing the car and manoeuvring it to a safe place, the driver can use their hazard lights to warn other road users that there is a problem. This should make people aware of the car and so avoid a road traffic accident.

There are ways to reduce the risk of causing an accident through poorly maintained tyres, but it is not always possible to avoid being hit by another road user who has not checked theirs.
