Road deaths and serious injuries treated as murder by UK police

Thousands die on UK roads each year and this country's police now approach serious car accidents as murder inquiries.

Tougher treatment by the police of car crashes forms part of a national campaign to reduce fatalities that total more than 3,100 a year at present, while about 35,000 people are seriously injured.

Police now use a national manual for road death investigations that presses for better investigations of road traffic incidents and always considers drivers as potential criminal suspects.

Officers are now trained to better employ a forensic, scientific approach and techniques that detectives investigating murders tend to use.

Police are taught to seal off accident scenes if necessary and to scour for evidence. Victims and witnesses must be monitored closely, road camera footage examined, and house-to-house enquiries considered.

Figures show that police charge about 10 per cent of drivers who are in a fatal crash with death by dangerous driving - which can lead to a 10-year jail sentence and unlimited fines.

Traffic police now work to spot people taking drugs and driving - recognised to be a major reason for road crashes. Obvious signs include unusual behaviour, sweating, red eyes, pupil dilation, and slurred speech.

It is heartening to see road accident fatalities are falling - 3,421 in 1998 was down to 3,172 in 2006, although critics complain better efforts must be made to ensure the figure falls faster.

The UK's road safety record is considered among the best in the world, although it has the second worst death rate for children in the European Union.
