Car accident risks are rife in the suburbs

Just as there are many car accident hazards on busy motorways and poorly lit country lanes, there is also a great deal of risks in the suburbs.

When driving on the open road you need to be wary of tailgaters, speeding drivers and people pulling dangerous manoeuvres, such as undertaking. However, driving close to home can double your risk of sustaining a personal injury such as whiplash in a car accident.

The reason for this is that people are actually more blas about driving in areas that they are familiar with. For example, drivers are more likely to get behind the wheel after having a few drinks if they are just a few miles from home and are convinced that they can take the back roads in order to avoid any potential police checks.

Another reason those driving in their local area are likely to be less attentive is the mistaken belief that they do not need to concentrate on where they are going. This can lead to some drivers switching off completely and going on autopilot, which is particularly scary when coming back to earth and wondering where the last ten minutes have gone plenty of time for a car crash or two to have occurred.

It is not just the drivers that cause car accidents either. In suburban areas there are many more pedestrians and although there are usually lower speed limits in force this does not stop pedestrians, particularly children, mucking about in the road.

Areas surrounding schools are very tricky to drive through as many children will wander out into the road without looking and, no matter how slowly you are driving, your chances of having a road accident are especially high, so motorists need to be extra aware and quick to react.

But it's not just pedestrians that can roam into the road. In suburban areas there are likely to be more domestic pets on the streets, such as cats and dogs. And although dogs are supposed to be on leads, when they get excited they have been known to run out in front of traffic. This could cause a serious car crash as a driver may swerve to in to the path of oncoming traffic in order to miss an animal.

Also, cats are particularly fond of curling up on or under cars to keep warm in cooler weather, so it is advisable to just check around your car before starting up the engine.
