Car accidents and the balding, under-inflated truth

Tyres that are poorly maintained or under inflated have the potential to cause car accidents.

This is why it is particularly worrying to learn that shockingly few UK drivers actually bother to check the pressure of their tyres.

A study by Continental Tyres has found that 40% of motorists in Britain claim to have never carried out this essential safety measure.

To make things more worrying, even fewer drivers said that they knew how to check tread depth, while 70% didn't know what the legal tread depth was anyway.

But the uneasy reading doesn't end there. Around 20% of motorists admitted that they were driving on tyres that would probably fail to meet the legal tread limits.

And it seems that simple periodic visits to the petrol station to check tyre pressure may not be enough, with the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) advising weekly checks.

Tim Shallcross, the IAM Trust's Head of Technical Policy and Advice, explains, "The danger is that the drive to the filling station increases tyre pressure significantly.

"This means that, although the pressure gauge may be accurate, tyres can be under-inflated by between 12 and 15 per cent. The survey shows that two thirds of motorists inflate their tyres at garages, therefore vehicle and tyre manufacturers should consider changing their recommended settings to ‘warm' pressure levels."

Shallcross concludes, "For all these reasons drivers should check the tyre pressure weekly."

For those motorists who do this, not only will they be eliminating a potential car accident hazard, they will also be saving money, as correctly inflated tyres reduce fuel costs.
