One of the risks that can lead to a car accident is a crosswind, where a strong wind blows from the side of a car as it travels along a road.
Unlike a headwind or tailwind, where all that is affected is speed, a driver dealing with a crosswind has to adjust his or her steering to deal with the outside force, effectively cornering slightly to achieve forward motion. When the crosswind is gusty or erratic, this can be even more of a challenge.
Even where a driver is maintaining his or her own lane position well, it must be remembered that other drivers may not be handling the crosswind as well; a mistake from another driver can lead to a road traffic accident befalling even the best driver, with the resulting risk of personal injury, whiplash and financial cost.
Patents have been requested in both Germany and the USA for products that will equip cars with sensors that can detect crosswinds and either warn a driver of the need to steer differently to avoid a car crash, or to directly affect the steering of the car as it moves.
An American website, however, recommends a more low-tech approach to the problem: it claims that raising the elbows while driving will allow the force of inertia to react to crosswinds faster than conscious thought. It does not, however, cite research to back up this theory.
Research has, however, been undertaken into the aerodynamic structure of vehicles, and this has shown that some cars designed for excellent air-flow in wind tunnels fare much worse in the face of a crosswind. This research has also shown that the UK may be a country in which the risk of a car crash as a result of a crosswind is higher than in central Europe, due to the placement of trunk roads and a tendency of strong prevailing winds to gust in this country.
