Across the world many millions of people suffer personal injuries in car accidents each year. In the UK, the road accident casualty figure stands at around 250,000, with around 3,000 of these being fatal. As such, road accidents are a leading cause of injury and death in the UK and one which must be reduced by some means.
There have been many suggestions as to how this objective is best achieved. Some believe that we must concentrate on reducing the speed at which we drive, whilst others feel that increasing the difficulty of the driving test or raising the age at which people can learn to drive is the answer to cutting the number of car crashes on our roads.
Daytime running lights
The idea of making daytime running lights a mandatory feature of all cars in the UK is a simple suggestion, but one which some researchers claim could have a very real impact on the number of vehicle collisions occurring. It is something which we have seen on Swedish-made cars such as Volvos and Saabs for many years, but for some reason the UK has not caught on.
Extensive studies into the effect of daytime running lights on the car accident rate of an individual car show that the use of headlamps reduces crashes by around 15%. Whilst this figure does vary by a percentage point or two depending on the way the study is set up, this is an excellent reduction for what is a very simple change.
If we look at these studies in a little more detail, the mean results show that daytime running lights reduce front or side-on collisions by 13% and rear-end collisions by 16%. Furthermore, the number of pedestrian collisions was reduced by 25%; a massive reduction in a type of collision which often results in serious personal injury.
However, some believe that daytime running lights are more distracting than beneficial and could actually cause road traffic accidents in some circumstances. For example, it has been suggested that motorists will only be looking for these lights when they check whether the road is clear, putting road users who don't have daytime running lights such as pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders at risk of being overlooked.
