Car accidents and the Drive Smart partnership

Perhaps it is an indictment of the UK driving license test, or maybe it says a great deal about the attitude of British youth today, but it is undeniable that one in five new drivers has a car accident within one month of passing their test.

Road safety experts have often wished it were possible to intervene early in order to offer at risk young drivers road safety training. Now, it seems, they are about to have their wishes granted with the introduction of the "Drive Smart" scheme, an initiative launched in partnership between the AA and the police force.

The scheme focuses on young drivers with a history of car accidents or driving offences such as driving while phoning or driving without a seatbelt, offering them the chance of two-hour advanced lessons with an AA instructor. The lessons are then consolidated by the use of a supporting workbook.

The charity's director and AA president, Edmund King, comments, "Driving causes more teenage deaths than stabbings or drugs, with new drivers and their passengers accounting for one in five car deaths. By working with Police to target those who are the biggest risk we can start to tackle this carnage.

"Drive Smart can help those most at risk to become safer, more responsible drivers - reducing the danger they present to themselves and others on our roads."

North Wales Police have been the first to introduce the scheme, with other forces expected to follow.

Supt Simon Shaw, Head of Roads Policing for North Wales Police, said: "Young drivers and their passengers are being injured and killed on our roads at levels that we must not accept.

"The Drive Smart scheme provides an opportunity for the police to signpost high risk young drivers into high quality driver training.

"In North Wales, officers will be visiting the homes of those that we nominate to discuss their driving history with them, and to outline the benefits of the course. I hope the family and friends of the young drivers will join us in encouraging them to take advantage of this unique training opportunity."
