Prevent child car accidents by being ‘safer together'

Preventing car accidents that involve children is high on the list of priorities for CAPT (child accident prevention trust) and their 2009 Child Safety Week theme of safer together aimed to promote road awareness and pedestrian safety for young road users across the UK.

School children took part in ‘pedestrian training' to help them understand the dangers of crossing the road and to help them to understand why they should look both ways and not just rely on the eyes of the parent or adult that is accompanying them.

In Malin Bridge, Sheffield school children were treated to a visit by Walter the Puffin who helped them learn to walk safely along the busy streets and promoted ideas key to Child Safety Week for staying safe on the road; such as ‘holding hands', using walking buses, everyone in the car wearing a seatbelt, and the cycle helmet ‘belonging' together with the bike.

One eight year old pupil said, "I think it is good for your road sense […]. My favourite part was learning how to cross the road safely with an adult. I couldn't believe it when the puffin turned up to help us. That was a lot of fun!"
