Lewis Hamilton makes anti-speeding plea to cut car accidents

The rising prevalence of car accidents is a global menace that threatens to become the leading cause of disability and premature death for children aged 5-14 by 2015, according to the World Health Organisation.

In an attempt to prevent this hypothesis from becoming reality the Make Roads Safe campaign has been created by a broad-based alliance of public health bodies, motoring groups, road safety NGOs (non-governmental organisations) and international organisations who work on worldwide road safety. The campaign's objective is to support and recommend the policy proposals of the Commission for Global Road Safety and the 2004 World Report on road traffic injury prevention.

In June 2009, Lewis Hamilton, the Formula One motor racing champion, backed the campaign with an anti-speeding message aimed primarily at young drivers

Lending his support to the campaign which aims to cut international road deaths form 1.3 million in 2008 to 900,000 in 2020, Hamilton told the Times, "The speed limit is there for a reason and I think everyone should stick to it. I do."

He also spoke about having made speeding "mistakes" and how he had learned from these driving errors. Hamilton also stated that he understood peer pressure on young people to drive fast because he had experienced it himself.

He said, "The message I would try and send out is take a step back and think before you act. You could easily make a mistake and lose your friend's life or your own life. It's about being sensible and making the right decisions. If you want to have fun, go to a go-kart circuit.

"On the roads it's not just you out there — you have oncoming traffic, you have people crossing the road and you may have passengers."

The Make Roads Safe campaign organiser's call for a "decade of action" received Hamilton's support as they asked world governments to invest more than £180 million to prevent car accidents in developing countries where car ownership is increasing at speed.

Statistics reveal that road deaths are on course to reach 1.9 million a year by 2020 if the message regarding road safety is not heeded rapidly.
