Compensation for car accident victims can help to rebuild lives

Car accidents wreck lives and leave permanent scars, both physical and emotional, and the innocent victims of negligent road users are left facing lives that will never be the same again.

In March 2009, a case came to light that revealed the truly horrific nature of some dangerous drivers and reckless road users who cause car accidents and then fail to do anywhere near the decent thing.

In January of the year before, a builder from Nottinghamshire got behind the wheel after consuming alcohol and caused a head-on collision with a vehicle being driven by a 61-year-old grandmother; her vehicle caught fire and she was trapped inside, unable to escape.

The drunk-driver ran from the scene.

Passers-by tried to assist, but the flames were too powerful and fire-fighters battled for over an hour to free the injured woman.

She described her ordeal to local press, saying, "I came as near as anyone would ever want to come to dying.

"And I'll never forget lying there in that burning wreckage and seeing him run away."

The woman's physical injuries included a shattered pelvis, broken ribs and arm, and injuries to her head, face, teeth, neck, collar bone, knees and ankles. The impact of the on-coming vehicle caused her right femur to be dislocated and pushed up through her pelvis. Her right leg is now permanently shorter than her left leg.

The driver, who had previous convictions for violence, was given a ten month prison sentence after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and driving under the influence.

The injured driver's personal injury solicitor said, "We are extremely disappointed with the verdict.
"The defendant will, in all likelihood, serve only a fraction of the sentence and will be free within six months.

"A separate civil action is already underway; hopefully to recover financial compensation for the very serious injuries [my client] has received.

"Tougher sentences are needed to deter drink drivers who flagrantly break the law with no regard for their victims."

The car accident victim added, "I feel I have aged at least 10 years since the accident. I have no stamina and I'm in constant pain as a result of my injuries. I cannot sleep at night and have constant flashbacks of the crash – even the sound of sirens on TV still causes me to go cold.

"My ambition to walk the foothills of the Himalayas when I reach retirement age is now a pipedream. Everything that I held dear has been robbed from me."
