In British society as a whole there is a debate about whether it is more environmentally friendly for people to buy new cars or to stick with their existing, older vehicles – however, from the perspective of the prospective vehicle owner, it would seem the answer is clear: newer cars are better at avoiding car accident injury.
A 2007 Department for Transport report looked into the issue and stated that a study (Broughton, 2007) had found that in collisions between newer and older vehicles, occupants of older vehicles are at greater risk of suffering fatal car accident injury than occupants of newer vehicles.
Furthermore, the same study determined that the mean risk of fatal crash injury for drivers of new vehicles was less than half that of drivers of comparatively old vehicles.
However, the issue becomes a little less clear when it is considered that the fatality rate is higher for drivers who collide with a newer vehicle, regardless of the age of their own car.
As well as the myriad safety automotive advancements which have been made over the past decade, there is the issue of weight. In the three decades leading up to 2007, cars increased in weight by an average of 30% and the driver fatality rates fell in inverse correlation to the weight of their own vehicle – as a general rule it can be said that the heavier the vehicle the more protected the driver.
A spokesperson from compensation solicitor firm YouClaim comments, "The issue of car weight is a tricky one.
"Drivers and passengers alike want to be better protected, but in doing so may be increasing the risk of injury to other road users. Only a comprehensive road policy can properly address this question."
