The curse of the movie industry car accident

When a car accident occurs in most walks of life, even in a work scenario, it is viewed quite simply as an unfortunate accident, but when two crashes occur within 48 hours on the set of a US movie, speculation soon starts within the notoriously superstitious film industry that the movie could be cursed.

In May 2009, just such events occurred during the filming of The Sorcerer's Apprentice, a modern remake of the 1940 Walt Disney Fantasia piece, based on the poem Der Zauberlehrling by Goethe, set to the iconic 1897 music of Paul Dukas.

The first car accident on the film set occurred when a Ferrari, driven by a stunt driver, crashed into a pavement, knocking down a lamppost and injuring two bystanders, during a chase scene.

The accident occurred close to Manhattan's Times Square and the busy New York streets had not been closed. The producers of the film were criticised and personal injury lawyers for one of the injured pedestrians said they would make a compensation claim.

In the second smash, crew members were injured when a sports utility vehicle (SUV), unconnected with the film, swerved to avoid a taxi and careered into a marquee in which the crew were sitting. After the SUV missed the taxi it allegedly hit a parked car and jumped both vehicles crashing over the curb and into the area where the film crew was situated.

Nine film operatives were hospitalised; requiring treatment for minor injuries.

However, the media rumour-mill quickly got to work suggesting that the film was "cursed" following the many injuries and deaths that occur on film sets involving storylines relating to the supernatural or science fiction. Crew members and cast were either killed, injured or struck by tragedy during or after making the films Poltergeist, The Omen and Superman.

And in early 2009, during the filming of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, a stuntman was involved in a ‘flying scene' accident in which he fell from his harness and suffered severe back injuries.
