In the UK thousands of women work in jobs that, in some way, rely on them driving cars. However, to do this safely, women workers require adequate training, something that is often not on offer, according to research. Indeed an employer's failure to provide sufficient driver training may make it liable for a car accident compensation claim in the event of an employer or member of the public suffering a car crash injury.
Indeed, one poll, carried out by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), revealed that a very high number of women drive for work (as many as 61%), yet only 22% of these said that their employer had offered them driver training.
This does not compare well with the figures for men. Around the same number of men driver for work (60%), yet 94% say they have been offered driver training.
Although, on first sight, it might appear that sexism could be the explanation for this disparity, experts believe that women may be suffering because of their reputation for being safer drivers.
Statistically, this is the case. For example, Department for Transport figures show that in 2007 350 women were killed in fatal road accidents, compared to 1640 men.
While acknowledging this, Simon Elstow, IAM's head of training, said that although women are less likely to be involved in a fatal car crash, "They are most vulnerable at junctions and are involved in more low speed accidents, which can result in hefty costs to employers. We would encourage female drivers to 'speak up' at work and request driver training as part of the employer's duty of care.
He added, "We encourage businesses to offer driver training and assessment to all their employees as best practice and a duty of care. Employers have a responsibility to take all reasonable steps to lower the risks to employees when behind the wheel.
