Road safety, car accident compensation claims and Nobel Peace Prize winners

The drive to increase road safety and reduce the numbers of car accident compensation claims, both in the UK and throughout the wider world, has some truly high profile support.

In fact, with the support of Nobel Peace Prize winners Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former US President Jimmy Carter and Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, it would be hard to come up with a more formidable and influential team.

Although road accidents in the UK still occur at unacceptable levels - something which is reflected in the billions of pounds spent each year on car accident compensation claims - the road safety outlook in many developing Asian and African countries is much worse.

This reality has led to the powerful triumvirate of Carter, Tutu and Arias to write a letter to the United Nations calling for a global Ministerial Conference on road safety issues. Provisionally entitled Make Roads Safe, the campaign has already garnered one million signatures of support, which were delivered to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

What the Nobel Peace Prize winners say
The three Nobel Prize winners each deliver a powerful argument in support of a global road safety project.

Jimmy Carter said, "As our world becomes increasingly mobile, it is imperative that we give more attention to the safety of our roads and methods of transportation. The Make Roads Safe campaign is an essential step towards saving the 3000 lives that are lost daily in road accidents."

Archbishop Tutu also voiced his support, commenting that, "if the children, pedestrians and cyclists in developing countries, who represent the vast majority of the casualties, had the vote there would only be one outcome."

President Arias highlighted the importance of the role the UN can play in combating car crashes worldwide, "In a world facing war and violence of many kinds, the violent deaths on our planet's roadways often go unnoticed. Strong leadership from the heart of the United Nations is vital if we are to give this problem the attention it deserves, and end these tragic and preventable losses. I express my heartfelt support for the Make Roads Safe campaign."
