Car accident compensation could result from police vehicle crash

In the UK, we have high expectations of the behavioural standards for people willing to become police officers, including their driving abilities, and it's encouraging to see that at least one police force has reduced the number of crashes in which its officers have been involved and the consequent car accident compensation paid.

North Yorkshire Police says that although in three years from April 2006 and March 2009 there were 1,398 accidents involving its 512 vehicles leading to legal bills and compensation costing almost £400,000, since then there has been a steady decline in numbers of incidents and costs.

With the force taking a closer look at its rate of accidents and the causes of them, it found many happened during manoeuvres, including reversing, and particularly with large vehicles such as vans.

Another major cause of accidents was where there had been pursuit of suspects, many of which resulted in arrests. The subsequent damage to police vehicles was regarded as part of the job of officers who were protecting their communities.

Police drivers are more highly trained than members of the public and, despite the stresses of their job, have relatively few accidents, however, if the car in which you are the driver, or a passenger, is involved in an accident with a police vehicle and it is not your fault then you may be eligible to make a claim for damages.

As with any other employer, a police authority is responsible for its employees, the police officers who drive patrol cars, motorbikes and other vehicles in the course of their work and if a road traffic accident is caused by the actions or negligence of an officer then the driver may be liable.

Just because the employee is a police officer does not exclude them from obeying the law but sometimes there may be justification for their actions or they could have been foreseen. In those cases, if you have been involved in a car crash with a police vehicle, it would be a good idea to obtain advice from an experienced personal injury solicitor.
