Child Safety Week 2010 began on June 21st of that year and on that day the consumer testing magazine Which? published results of a survey which polled more than 1,000 parents of children who, by law, should have been using a child seat to prevent the danger of personal injury which may have necessitated the claiming of car accident compensation.
At that time, 17% of those polled said their children, aged between four and 12, did not use any form of car seat. While 30% said they used backless booster cushions for their children. Such booster seats met with the legal requirements of the time but offered far less protection in side-on crashes than full-sized child car seats.
Shockingly, the research revealed that almost half of children aged between four and 12 years of age were therefore at risk of serious personal injury in a side-on car accident.
Peter Vickery Smith, Chief Executive of Which? said, ''Every year in the UK, around 30 children under 12 years old are killed while travelling in cars, and a further 300 are seriously injured.
''Kids might pile the pressure on parents not to have to sit in a full-sized car seat when they get a bit older, but it could mean the difference between life and death.''
He added, ''Nobody who has seen the footage of a side-impact collision on our website would choose to use a backless booster seat.
''While they're better than using no car seat at all, they simply don't provide enough protection.''
The consumer magazine stressed that they were working extensively with consumer groups to help raise the minimum standards for child car seats across the EU and were engaged in making calls to manufacturers to stop producing backless booster seats pre-emptively of a change in child safety legislation.
Around 25% of all car accidents involve side-on impact and are a major case of car accident compensation claims.
