The importance of checking car lights

However carefully a motorist drives, it is impossible to predict when another driver is not paying proper attention to the roads or has failed to properly maintain their vehicle. Consequently, people often seek car accident compensation after they have been involved in a collision.

When a car does not have all of the legally required lights working, the vehicle's visibility is significantly reduced and it can also fail to give other motorists the correct warning signals. To help prevent a road accident from happening, drivers should regularly perform checks to ensure that their vehicle isn't a danger to other road users.

Brake lights are vital as they warn other drivers that the vehicle is slowing down. A car driver travelling behind a vehicle without brake lights may not be sufficiently warned that the vehicle in front is decelerating, which may cause the car behind to crash into it, resulting in a personal injury such as whiplash.

Reversing lights also issue a warning to other drivers, informing them that the vehicle is about to go backwards – this could be otherwise unexpected. Some cars have two white break lights on both sides of the rear end of the vehicle and other models just have one light to maintain.

Vehicle headlights are extremely important as they not only allow the driver to see their surroundings, but the lights also ensure that the vehicle is visible to other drivers on the road. Vehicles must have all headlights and rear lights working – if a car only has one headlight working, another vehicle may mistake the car for a motorbike.

Full beam headlights should only be used to gain better vision on a dark road and should be turned off if any oncoming traffic is approaching as they can dazzle other road-users. Similarly, fog lights should only be used in when vision is very limited due to the intensity of the lights.

Cyclists should also ensure that they have suitable lights installed on their bicycles to help make their presence known to other road-users.
