As well as failing to consider the risk, many drivers fail to consider the fact that should a failure of basic vehicle maintenance cause a crash, they may be liable for any resulting car accident compensation litigation.
Unfortunately, neglect of basic maintenance is much more widespread than most people think. According to a survey by road safety charity Brake, in January 2010, 42% of car and van drivers admit to having driven with a potentially serious defect within the previous 12 months.
Although motorists confessed to committing a whole raft of different safety breaches, perhaps the most worrying was the preponderance of drivers taking to the wheel with either defective brakes or little to no knowledge of the state of a vehicle's braking system.
More than eight in ten said they had no knowledge of the amount of wear on their brake pads at the time of their vehicle's last MOT. Concern at this was heightened by the disclosure that more than seven in ten only ever get their brakes checked at the time of vehicle MOT.
A Brake spokesperson warned motorists that failing to ensure the safety of braking systems could result in more than liability for car accident compensation; offending motorists may also face prosecution.
He said, "This research shows a shockingly low level of knowledge and concern among drivers when it comes to the safety of their vehicle, particularly out of sight, out of mind' components such as brakes which are so safety critical.
"Drivers seem to be placing far too much reliance on their annual MOT and passively relying on their garage to tell them when to replace components, rather than asking questions about level of wear and deciding to take action now rather than too late. Drivers cannot abdicate responsibility for safety to their garage. If your vehicle causes a crash due to a mechanical defect, it will be you in the dock," he said.
Other aspects of the survey revealed an alarming complacency amongst motorists when it comes to their brakes. Nearly nine in ten said that they were almost certain that should their brakes be tested, they would be found to be in good functioning order, despite having no evidence to support their claims.
Brake advises, "Just because brakes or other safety components feel OK when you are driving, it doesn't mean they are. Find out the facts."
