Car accident compensation and child background

In 2010, Road Safety Analysis, a non-profit statistical research organisation, released a landmark and UK-first report into child road casualty risk by area of residency. Its findings raised some significant questions about the increased road accident risk of children from impoverished and deprived areas as well as helping underline the importance of no win, no fee mechanisms for car accident compensation for such children.

Called Child Casualties 2010; A study into resident risk of children on roads in Great Britain 2004-08, the report examined children's road accident risk across some 408 local authorities.

It looked at data over a half-decade period, covering 2004 to 2008, and found that the children at the greatest risk of casualty were those from "families on lower incomes who often live in large council estates where there is little owner-occupation."

For example, children living in Preston were twice as likely to suffer injury in a car crash than those from the upmarket area of Kensington and Chelsea, London.

It also found that children were most likely to suffer road accident injury on a Friday or Saturday, with Sunday being, statistically, the safest day for children. Furthermore, May was found to be the month with the highest risk of child injury, with the risk at its slightest in the winter months when the injury rate decreases by around 25%.

Road Safety Analysis's director commented, "The results of this study show a worrying discrepancy between different parts of the country. Children in some areas experience considerably higher risk from road traffic crashes than others who might be living just over the border.

"There is still further study to be undertaken and we are keen to make sure all of the data and analysis techniques that underpin this study can be accessed by local authorities to allow them to investigate how they might ensure the safety of children from their communities."

A spokesperson from no win, no fee car accident compensation specialist YouClaim said of the study, "Although children are still less likely than adults to suffer injury on the road, the accident rate is still unacceptably high and more certainly needs to be done to bring down the numbers of incidents involving children from the least privileged backgrounds.

"Such incidents can be traumatic to children and any child affected needs the best rehabilitation possible and litigation may help provide for this."
