From August 2011 Thames Valley Police joined a Europe-wide initiative to put a halt to speeding motorists. A significant amount of car accident claims are continually made arising from collisions involving speeding drivers.
Thames Valley Police will, from this time onwards, be issuing anything from a fixed penalty notice to a court summons to drivers ignoring speed limits.
Drivers can frequently be tempted to speed, whether to get to an appointment, to get a head start on a weekend away or to get home on time for dinner. However, speed limits are put in place for a reason and potentially fatal car accidents can result from driving too fast for the road conditions.
Motorists often don't consider that the speed limit states the maximum speed they may drive. It's not advisable to match the speed limit throughout a road containing sharp bends as you may easily lose control of your vehicle.
Similarly, drivers often assume they are safe travelling at 70 mph on the motorway. However, although this speed might be safe during a dry day, drivers compromise their own safety and that of other road users during wet weather, night time and icy conditions.
By driving at a sensible speed, motorists pose less of a risk to other road users and reduce the chance of a car accident. By being in control of their vehicle, drivers are also more likely to be able to stop if a person runs out in front of them, or if there are obstacles up in the road ahead.
However, it is also important to bear in mind that driving too slowly can also present a danger to other road users. For example, if a motorist drives at 40 mph on the motorway, they will most likely agitate other drivers and, if they were unlucky enough to be involved in a car accident, could be hit by a car going at 30 mph faster than them.
Speeding becomes even more dangerous in cases where drivers choose to pay attention to their phones or attempt to read a map. These driving offences are hugely dangerous and personal injury claims are often made in car accidents involving such motorists.
The Thames Valley Police initiative will enforce speed limits, hopefully improving road safety and prosecuting those who abuse the law.
