Personal injury solicitors believe that, were it not for the fact that drunk-driving is viewed as socially unacceptable, there would be many more car accident claims for injuries caused by drunk drivers. Unfortunately, there is still significant progress to be made on the issue of drug driving, with some sections of society having a laissez-faire approach to the criminal practice.
This complacency is easily demonstrated; the Department for Transport reports that around one in ten young male drivers admit to drug driving.
However, in 2009, following criticisms that it had been "ridiculously slow" in confronting the problem, the government responded by launching an anti-drug driving campaign.
The campaign, which will cost taxpayers £2.3 million, is being led by a series of television advertisements.
Transport Secretary Lord Adonis hopes the campaign will change attitudes. He explains, "Of course it's socially acceptable to drink, but it's not socially acceptable to be a drink driver, and we need to do the same with drugs.
"Whatever one's views on drug taking, we've got to make it absolutely socially unacceptable to drive while under the influence of drugs, because it can kill."
Although it is not known how many car accident claims are caused by drug driving, it is estimated that one in five car crashes are caused by people who have some form of illegal drug in their bloodstream.
