Car accident claims for speed-related incidents

The speed limit has long been a focus for national debate in the UK, with many believing that it is too high in certain areas and a factor in some car accident claims.

However, in 2011 the Government caused further controversy and debate by putting forward a proposal to increase the motorway speed limit from 70mph to 80mph.

The temperature of the debate was raised when the Department for Transport released a statistical model which calculated that such an increase would cause a rise in motorway deaths of around 20%.

This finding was unsurprising to many, including the nation's car accident claim solicitors, most of whom are aware that according to accepted statistical models an increase of average motorway speeds of just 3mph has a significant affect on road accident fatality and serious personal injury rates.

Despite this, the Government said that a motorway speed limit increase would bring enough economic benefits by reducing journey times and bringing the nation's towns and cities closer together.

One expert, Rune Elvik, from Norway's Institute of Transport Economics, whodevised the so-called power model, told the Guardian newspaper, "Many drivers would probably say that they are more alert and more prepared for things if they drive faster, and actually there is a little bit of support for that point of view.

"But it's by no means sufficient to compensate for the effect of the speed. They are not able to override or repeal the laws of physics," he added.
