No more car accident claims

In Autumn 2010, a glut of news reports emerged surrounding research into so-called driverless cars and how they had the potential to revolutionise the world's roads and possibly cut the number of car accident claims.

The technology had been around for some time, but various research teams were suddenly reporting their successful trial journeys where unmanned vehicles negotiated real streets without mishap.

And road safety pundits heralded a time when all cars would be driven by advanced computers with the ability to never be distracted, break motoring laws, fall asleep at the wheel or suffer from road-rage.

Of course motoring enthusiasts were quick to point out that some people actually enjoy driving and the thought of a ban on human-driven cars was not well-received.

But the fact remained that driverless cars had become the stuff of reality and were no long just a science fiction writer's dream.

Technology to prevent car accident claims
One of the major developers of driverless cars was internet giant Google whose team developed a car which appeared to have the makings of a feasible prototype. Its various features for safe driverless driving included:

  • Roof mounted sensor which rotates to generate a 3D map of the vehicle's surroundings.
  • Windscreen mounted video camera to detect traffic lights and moving vehicles in front.
  • Radar sensors – three at the front and one at the back to help the vehicle determine its road position.

Google's project leader Sebastian Thrun pointed out in various news reports that 1.2 million people are killed in car accidents every year.

He said, "We believe our technology has the potential to cut that number, perhaps by as much as half."
