Car accidents caused by aquaplaning vehicles

One of the risks that can lead to a car accident is aquaplaning or hydroplaning. This is where a vehicle loses traction with the road due to a layer of water building between the rubber tyres of the vehicle and the road surface. This causes the driver to lose all power to steer, brake or accelerate.

Every vehicle relies on the friction between the tyres and the road surface for changes in direction or speed to function. Although the grooves of a rubber tyre are designed to disperse water from beneath the tyre, in severe wet weather, an excess of water can force a wedge of water under the leading edge of the tyre, causing it to lift from the road. The tyre then skates on a sheet of water with little, if any direct road contact

This in effect causes the vehicle to become an uncontrollable sled as the driver is powerless to control the car leaving them vulnerable to crashing into the road-side, pedestrians or other road users.

Aquaplaning, out of control and compensation
The risk of aquaplaning can be affected by a number of different factors. If the driver accelerates brakes or steers harshly, they are more at risk as are drivers of cars with worn tread or under inflated tyres.

If you have suffered personal injury as the result of a road traffic accident - whether or not aquaplaning was involved - and you believe another party is to blame, you may be eligible to make a claim for compensation as a result.
