It has long been said that faith is a great healer. However in 2011, research by psychologists in the United States discovered that faith could actually have a significant role to play in brain injury rehabilitation.
The researchers looked at the effect faith has on brain injury rehabilitation by assessing some 88 people who had suffered traumatic brain injury in variety of circumstances, including car crashes, motorcycle accidents, work accidents and falls from height. Interestingly, they found that there was a much higher level of emotional and physical rehabilitation among those who reported a higher sense of religious wellbeing.
"Among healthy adults, religion and spirituality have shown strong association with improved life satisfaction and physical and mental health outcomes," commented one of the scientists who worked on the research.
However, there was no suggestion that religion or faith could offer a kind of miracle cure. Just as with similar research, the study, which was reported in Rehabilitation Psychology, found that social support was vital in giving people the best possible chance at a successful rehabilitation.
A spokesperson from YouClaim's catastrophic injury claims team comments, "Although there is no suggestion in this research that any God is rewarding believers with an increased rate of healing, the study does indicate that positive psychology coupled with a belief in something worthwhile can have a powerful impact on a person's chances of recovery and rehabilitation.
"However, it is only when people are afforded the practical means at rehabilitation that a positive outlook can be fostered. As such, it is vital that deserving claimants receive 100 per cent compensation for their injuries."
