Claim a bank holiday weekend as your own and avoid a car accident

Bank holiday weekends are hugely looked forward to and people often plan short trips away to make the most of their time off. However, increased traffic on the roads often leads to collisions and victims might later make a car accident claim.

To have a relatively stress-free bank holiday weekend, drivers should remain aware of the increased amounts of traffic and plan ahead accordingly.

Firstly, the driver should plan their route and also have an alternative route ready in anticipation of delays and bad weather. Extra time should also be included for the journey, especially if the destination is particularly popular or the journey will be taken during a rush hour.

If the driver can, it might pay to travel either very early in the morning or much later in the day as it isn't as likely that there will be as many other drivers on the road.

Traffic jams are unpredictable so it's a good idea to take some food and drink on the journey in case there isn't an opportunity to stop and buy any.

It is also important to make sure that the car has enough fuel for the journey. Sticking to speed limits is not only safe, but will also reduce the fuel consumption of the car.

Taking the time to do some car maintenance before the journey could prevent a break-down and considerably reduce the amount of time spent travelling. Tyre pressure and wheel alignment, water levels and oil should all be checked prior to leaving.

Keeping the radio on is a good idea so that the driver can hear about any traffic updates and, if necessary, avoid a particular road.

Another way to avoid becoming involved in a car accident is to not travel by car at all. Some destinations, such as large cities, may be more economically and easily accessed through another form of transport, such as a train.
