Cycle safely and avoid needing an accident claim solicitor

Rural cycling can seem idyllic when compared to cycling along busy city roads. However, there are still several risks that come with rural cycling, and nasty accidents often leading cyclists to consult an accident claim solicitor.

It is important to bear a few safety issues in mind when taking a bike onto country roads. Although there is not much traffic, no one way systems and it may seem as if there is plenty of space, there are just as many dangers as in a town.

Other drivers using the roads present a large risk. Drivers who are familiar with the roads often have no hesitation in driving at high speeds, including any sharp bends the road may have. Unfortunately, they probably won't take into account whether a cyclist might be around the corner.

Drivers may also try to overtake a cyclist at the same time as a car is approaching from the opposite direction. Under these circumstances, it is often safer for a cyclist to signal or pull out further in to the road, leaving the car no space to overtake.

Although it may be tempting for a cyclist to stay close to the grass verges to allow cars all the space on the road, if a wheel catches the edge of the verge, it is very easy for the cyclist to lose balance and fall off. Lack of lane markings around tight corners also mean that drivers are likely to stray from their own side of the road.

As well as other road users, animals can also be a threat on country lanes. Rural dog owners do not always keep their pets on leads and cyclists have sustained many types of personal injury and even been killed from falling off their bikes due to an unexpected dog jumping out at them.

However, dogs aren't the only animals that cyclists should keep an eye out for. Sheep are not aggressive creatures, but they are unpredictable and are likely to run off in different directions. However, they do usually get scared easily, and making a loud noise should clear them off a road.

Despite these dangers, rural cycling can be an incredibly rewarding activity, leading to amazing views of natural beauty. To stay on the safe side, a cyclist should wear a high visibility vest, particularly at night when the roads are very dark, and ensure that their bicycle has working lights.
