There are a number of road tunnels in the UK and, as tunnels are slightly different to standard roads, it is important that drivers understand how to drive safely so they can avoid a potential accident.
Motorists should always ensure that they have enough fuel to get them through before they enter a tunnel, and they should turn on their vehicle headlights to ensure they are visible to other drivers.
Any traffic lights or signs should be obeyed and motorists should not suddenly stop or attempt to reverse their vehicle in a tunnel, unless there is an emergency.
Drivers should also not attempt to overtake if there is only one lane of traffic moving in each direction or if the lines in the middle of the road are unbroken.
Traffic can accumulate in tunnels for many reasons, including car accidents and planned road works, and, as they would on an open-air road, motorists should stay aware of the traffic in front of them so they can slow down or stop if they become caught up in a queue.
When a motorist can see that they are approaching a queue in a tunnel they should turn their hazard lights on briefly to warn other vehicles travelling behind about the upcoming delays.
In a queue, drivers should always keep their distance from the vehicle in front, even if the traffic is at a standstill. Car drivers should take note that they should always keep a two-second stopping distance between themselves and the vehicle in front in a tunnel, whereas lorry drivers should increase this to four seconds.
Motorists should always follow any instructions issued by tunnel officials and obey electronic signs.
